Hello there!
I’m Sam, a shape maker and illustrator from Hastings on the south east coast of the UK. Armed with a knife and a brush pen I try to create art based on things that inspire me!
I’ve been to Solent University and left with a First-Class Honours in Illustration. During this time I found nothing more enjoyable than experimentation, leading to a diverse range of skills and a broad catalogue of work. In second year I picked up a brush and some ink, while in third year I discovered the cutting mat, and it was only in the last few weeks I thought to combine the two!
During my three years I also was taught about art history, going deep into Bauhaus and other twentieth century art movements. For my dissertation, inspired by my love of video games, I wrote about pixel art - once the product of what was technically possible at the time and now a nostalgia-fueled style to itself.
I also managed to get third place in the Penguin Student Design Awards in the category of non-fiction thanks to the design I made for The Establishment (And How They Get Away With It) by Owen Jones. This was a shockingly fun experience, and you can see the design here!
On my page you’ve probably seen a fair few pieces based on movies and games. If you can’t tell… I’m a massive nerd. I enjoy most entertainment, from comics to board games - Star Wars related usually - but I also enjoy nothing more than a good theatre visit.
If you’d like to contact me with questions, work propositions, or just to say “hello”, there are plenty of options: You can find me on Instagram at @samueljayres where I post all my major art projects. I also have a second account, @sja.365, where I’m trying to be creative every day of the year - such fun!
I can also be emailed: samueljayres@outlook.com is the address you need for that!
Safe travels and best wishes,
Samuel J Ayres
